The competitive nature of public speaking

Toastmasters isn’t necessarily about competition, but for those who enjoy the challenge there are plenty of opportunities available.

At the beginning of March we hosted our annual speech and evaluation contest, with many of our members pitching their wits against one another in an action packed night of top shelf public speaking. Siobhan Flax (3rd place), Ali Siddiqui (2nd place), and Keith Robinson (1st place) all delivered deservedly winning evaluations, and Jonty Rooke (2nd place) and Ga Lok Chung (1st place) gave equally inspiring winning speeches.

Then in mid March, Ali Siddiqui, Jonty Rooke, Keith Robinson and Ga Lok Chung represented our club at the area level competition, where they did us proud and smashed it out of the park with Ali, Keith and Ga Lok proceeding to the District level.

Fast forward to Sunday 3rd April, and two of our speakers emerged victorious from the Division C level contest, and now move on to the District 91 level contest on 30th April. A huge congratulations to Keith Robinson and Ga Lok Chung who now proceed to the next stage of this international speech contest! And a massive congratulations to Ga Lok for receiving 1st place in the District speech competition on Sunday.

Even competitions are a team effort, and without the help of club members who volunteer their time and energy to be judges, timekeepers, vote counters and organisers, these marvellous events wouldn’t happen. So a special thank you to them, and to every speaker who got onboard for the journey.
