Starting 2021 at Toastmasters (5th January)

Happy new year and welcome back to our first Toastmasters meeting of 2021! Jack Rowson was our Toastmaster for this milestone meeting, and his intro kicked-off the meeting on a positive note, reminding us that despite the difficult times we are facing, there is cause for hope and positivity.

First up were short, improvised speeches, known as table-topics. We were in for a treat with Tim Cummins as our table topic master. Tim took the unique approach of categorising the questions as easy, medium or super-difficult! Plenty of our members took on the challenge of the hardest questions, like: “What time is it?” or “tell us about the quote ‘last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice”‘. Congratulations to all of the speakers and thanks to Tim for a new and interesting approach to table topics. Jonty Rooke delivered a detailed and entertaining evaluation of each of the table topic speakers.

Next, we moved onto the prepared speeches:

  • Chris Wood gave us an insightful and inspiration speech titled “The Imposter“.
  • Jon Lam delivered his motivational and timely speech “Rethinking New Year’s Resolutions

Thank you and congratulations to both of our speakers for delivering two top-quality, meaningful speeches.

Our evaluators delivered descriptive and helpful reviews to help the speakers learn and improve. A big thanks to Olga Galaiko and Matilda Hay for taking these important roles and doing a great job!

The last item of the agenda is always to announce the winners. Congratulations to:

Ali Saddiqui for best Table Topic
Tilda Hay for best evaluation

Thanks to everyone for a great meeting. Our next meeting is a very special Open House on Tuesday, 19th January. This is a meeting designed to show guests what Toastmasters can offer them. Find out more here!
