This week at Toastmasters (20th October)

The talented guests and members of the City of London Toastmasters have adapted brilliantly to our virtual meetings. This week’s meeting was no exception with a smooth and fantastically fun meeting.

We knew we were in for a treat with the fan-favourite Scott Baker as our Toastmaster this week. Scott calmed our nerves with a unique meditative visualisation exercise before kicking off the rest of the meeting. His energy and enthusiasm guided us through the meeting perfectly.

Jonty Rooke was our table-topic master. Jonty’s history lesson taught us that some interesting and noteworthy events have taken place on this day (20th October) throughout history; and he cleverly linked these into the table topic questions. Some highlights included:

  • The Disney movie Dumbo was released on this day in 1941. What is your favourite Disney movie?
  • Lightbulb invented on this day in 1879. If you were an inventor, what would you invent?
  • The Sydney Opera House was opened on this day in 1973. What’s your favourite building and why?
  • Doctor Who was launched on this day in 1963. If you were a time travelling timelord, where would you go?

The table topic speakers handled these questions like total experts – congratulations to all of them!

Next, we moved on to the prepared presentations.

  • Chris Wood delighted us with his ice-breaker speech ‘The Anatomy of Toastmaster’.
  • Ranjitha delivered an inspiration and heart-felt speech ‘I am remarkable’.
  • Olya Purikova gave us a confident and personal speech titled ‘It has been a year’
  • Tim Cummins shared an entertaining speech in classic Tim style ‘Life lessons from inconsistent golf game’.

Thank you to all of our speakers for delivering such wondering speeches. Congratulations!

Our evaluators delivered descriptive and helpful reviews to help the speakers learn and improve. A big thanks to Olga Galaiko, Christine Harris, Jack Rowson and Jonty Rooke for taking these important roles and doing a great job!

We wrapped up the meeting, but not before announcing the winners. Congratulations to:

Tim Cummins for the best table topic.
Jonty Rooke and Jack Rowson for the best evaluations.
Chris Wood for the best prepared speech.

Thanks to all who attended. Our next meeting is 3rd November and it’s a big one! It’s the 25th anniversary of the City of London Toastmasters. We hope to see you there!
