A belated summary of our moments of truth event on June 4th
Members and guests aligned around a number of aspects of our club that can be improved which included;
- First Impressions
- Membership Orientation
- Fellowship, Variety and Communication
- Program Planning and Meeting Organisation
- Membership Strength
- Achievement Recognition
Each category was scored and where the score was <=3 then suggested improvements were documented by the group. Loads of great suggestions!!
One of which was whether we make the seats less squeaky in the church 🙂
This session replaced our usual table topics slot – before prepared speeches
Daniel Klein spoke “About Mentoring” and it’s importance within Toastmasters and how it has personally helped him
Christen Dali delivered an amazing icebreaker “The Clothes Do Not Make The Woman” and shared 3 interesting facts about herself; 1) family heritage from Belgium, Morocco and Netherlands 2) her interests incl ballet, yoga and selling seaweed coffee 3) joined toastmasters to practice ahead of her bridesmaid speech as well as professional reasons
Rolf Merchant spoke about “The Conscientious Communicator” referencing some interesting stats on LinkedIN. Of 50m users, only 90,000 people say they are conscientious but 20m believe they have good people skills – and then cited Lucy Kellaway’s article in the FT about our need to ‘rebrand’ contentiousness
Tom Griffiths then educated us on “Whiskies of The World” sharing a detailed history of it’s genesis, first made in Ireland in the 12th century and named ‘the water of life’ before Scotland took on mainstream production a few hundred years later
All in all – a great meeting – with some really interesting speech topics
